Hinterglasmalerei (behind glass paintings) based on geographically specific ecological surveys of vertebrate species using the phone app Tinder and human translations of other vertebrate species calls.
GLENORCHY (NZ) / OSLO (NO) 25 km radius of Glenorchy/25 km radius of Oslo
In 1977 the astronomer and writer Carl Sagan and his team produced the Golden Voyager records. The archive contained a selection of images, sounds, music, images and messages in 54 different languages, intended to represent the diversity of life and culture on Earth. In 2017 Milledge was invited to participate in the exhibition “What Remains” at photography gallery Fotogalleriet, Oslo for their 40th anniversary. The premise of the exhibition was to develop work in response to the Golden Voyager records.
The research took two opposing/antipodean locations of the globe, Glenorchy (NZ) and Oslo (NO) as indicative of a snapshot of contemporary life on earth. Parallelling the act of calling out to or communicating with the future, the research focussed on calls between species and translations of language. Using the dating app Tinder on global function to reflect current technological transnational communications, mating calls” in the form of selected Tinder profile text were combined with human translations of bird calls to form two large poems that were painted onto the inside of the glass windows at Fotogalleriet.
